Our Saturday was mostly spent with M and D, eating in the garden for lunch and inside for dinner. M did a good weeding and sort of the garden and I was once again pleased to have guidance on what is a weed and what I can pull out, cut back or leave. More colour is bursting out and as if for their arrival a clematis bloomed with a beautiful reddish pinkish purple flower. The rain this week has been welcome, the flowers are thirsty and as I type I've noticed a beautiful red tall poppy which wasn't out yesterday. I always think self seeding flowers are such a bonus in a garden and I never quite understand how they do so well when I plant out things on purpose that never grow. It makes me think of the bright orange flowers (Marigold's I think) in Malawi that I would pick the seed heads of and wander around distributing merrily to get colour across the whole garden.
As Sunday rolled around I felt some nerves at joining the main league and my first scrimmage for over 8 years. I know I only have a month to enjoy it, hoping I don't break anything to spoil that. It was so much harder than rookie, with lots of hitting and getting used to the aggressive side of the game. I loved the feeling of play but I do need to wear contact lenses going forward! Pub after was fun, I hadn't intended to and I don't think I'll do it each week. We must have all smelt quite bad.
Then back to work, I hoped that I would be seen more as a permanent fixture now and that the classes I had struggled with would be willing to work more and misbehave less. Some were better but I had a couple of very hard lessons. I remind myself that they are easier, I know more names, I have some students on side but it does feel endless at times, repeating the simplest of instructions. I am wondering if we give students enough time in the school day to just talk to each other. So often they are expected to be silent, I expect it when I'm giving instructions but then once they can talk, wow - do they talk. The next step is to get them talking about the work. One day.
Choir on Monday was a welcome singing release, we have a complex song to get our heads around and I enjoyed the challenge. On Thursday I had the joy of seeing Tabitha, just for an hour or so but always lovely to connect back with Malawi friends. Then I met up with another pal and began my weekend.
A had an exam on Monday and both had one on Friday and that's A done, M has two next week and then they are free. I remember I worked quite a lot of that time when I'd finished college, I worked at a summer school and New Look. I think the girls plan on picking up extra shifts too before they head off to Roskilda later in June. We plan on having a celebratory meal and happily they have decided to go to prom.
