It was a cosy and lazy weekend for me, taking down the Christmas decorations and binge watching the Strike series were my main achievements. And as my mum pointed out, the female lead really looks like my cousin Caitlin.
I applied for a couple of jobs this week - a slightly strange thing to do for me as they weren't as a teacher - throwing my hat into an unknown ring and being acutely aware that I'm not going to be walking into something easily but worth it, if not only for my sense of purpose and potential change. I had a call from one recruitment team and one outright rejection. This could be a roller coaster. Some of them making me very excited and some less so.
It's been nice to have a walk with a pal and tea with another.
I headed to Brixton this week for a lunch date with Sharon - so lovely to finally see where she lives and to be fed an extremely health lunch - I could feel its goodness and would love to have a chef who did that for me every day. I thought it tasted great, she was not impressed with her own efforts but she had high standards. It was also good to talk through my thoughts and feelings, I am so very lucky to have people who love and know me well enough to feel like I am going to be fine. I do my best not to catastrophize but it is all so very scary and as I mentioned to Sharon, I really have no imagination when it come to jobs outside of education.
BigA and I have also been doing more around the house, the hall a never ending task it seems. We have some cheaper carpet samples too... how can you cat proof a carpet? We both like the same one so that's good but we really do need to sort the paint work out first. It's quite hard to get a good straight line! I did some tidying too - it is a satisfying task, getting my wardrobe looking neat and tidy. A task I used to undertake during the summer break and while in Malawi I had a housekeeper to do for me.
The girls headed back to school and are getting ready for their mock exams that happen at the end of this month - a month that seems to be flying by despite everything, how is it the 11th already. They are both studying well, I was pleased A took a bit of a break from it over the holiday and I think M did too. A had, what sounded like a great interview at LAMDA . She just has UAL to go.
I went out for one too many on Thursday and felt a bit rough in the morning but then I got an unexpected message via LinkedIn - a student from when I was a Head of Year. She told me she's marrying a fellow student from the year and how much he talks about me still. After a few messages I've been invited to their wedding reception and he's told me that I was the best teacher he ever had. It really made my day and got me quite emotional too. He was, in his own words, a challenging kid. I could happily see the care and kindness in him. I remember him very fondly and it's so lovely to hear he's doing well. And with all this nonsense going on he has reminded me of the good I have done and could still do. I hope I get the chance.
The week ended with Chinese and me insisting the girls watch a classic film with me and then a relatively early night.
